Victoria Chernyak, MD, MS, Joins Columbia Radiology
An Internationally Recognized Expert in Liver Imaging
We are very pleased to announce that Victoria Chernyak, MD, MS, FSAR, FESGAR, FACR, has joined the Department of Radiology at Columbia University Irving Medical Center as professor of radiology.
Dr. Chernyak, an expert in liver imaging and imaging of liver cancers, is one of the leading authorities of the Liver Imaging Reporting and Data System (LI-RADS), a comprehensive system of standardized imaging and interpretation of liver findings in patients at risk for hepatocellular carcinoma. Her many contributions to the field include serving as co-chair of the American College of Radiology's LI-RADS Steering Committee as well as co-editor of the 2018 LI-RADS Manual, and co-leading creation of a clear and concise universal liver imaging lexicon that has been adopted internationally.
“Dr. Chernyak is a nationally and internationally recognized leader in the subspecialty of liver imaging and imaging of liver cancers,” said Ajay Gupta, MD, MS, professor of radiology and chair of the Department of Radiology at Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons. “We are excited that she is joining Columbia Radiology, and we welcome her superb clinical expertise and excellence as an educator and researcher.”
A passionate educator, Dr. Chernyak has been recognized for her engaging and educational lectures by numerous awards, including the Society of Abdominal Imaging's prestigious Richard H. Marshak International Lecturer Award in 2021. In 2023, she was appointed editor for Radiology in Training, a program which mentors senior radiology residents and fellows in the art of scientific review, editing, and publishing.
Dr. Chernyak is an author of more than 150 peer-reviewed publications and co-PI on several American College of Radiology funded grants. She serves as deputy editor of Radiology and is a member of the scientific committees for several societies including the Society of Abdominal Radiology and the Radiological Society of North America.
Dr. Chernyak received her medical degree from Albert Einstein College of Medicine. She completed a radiology residency and abdominal MRI fellowship at Einstein's affiliated hospital, Montefiore Medical Center, after which she joined the faculty at Einstein. At Montefiore, she served as Director of Abdominal MRI and Interim Section Chief for the Division of Abdominal Imaging, as well as earning her Master of Science in Clinical Research Methods. Prior to joining Columbia, she was a professor of radiology at Weill Cornell Medicine and an attending radiologist at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.
