Study Selected for Abstract of the Year by Society of Interventional Radiology

Third-year interventional radiology integrated resident Abin Sajan, MD, will present one of four abstracts selected for 2024 Abstract of the Year by the Society of Interventional Radiology (SIR). The Abstract of the Year designation highlights the best scientific work submitted to the SIR's annual meeting in March.

"This is a well-deserved but not surprising accomplishment for Dr. Sajan, who is one of the shining stars in our residency," said Stephen Reis, MD, associate professor of radiology and program director for the Interventional Radiology Integrated Residency. "I look forward to observing the impact he has on interventional radiology research during the course of his career." 

Sajan will present the results of a multi-institutional study in which he and colleagues evaluated the long-term efficacy of hemorrhoid artery embolization (HAE) in 221 patients with symptomatic internal hemorrhoids that did not respond to other treatments. After undergoing the procedure, patients were evaluated at baseline and again one, three, and between six and 12 months following their treatment. Significant improvements were demonstrated for all measured outcomes.

"This is the largest sample size recorded in the literature for this procedure and one of the longest running studies as well," Sajan said.

HAE is a relatively new procedure, with most supporting research conducted outside of the U.S. The study supports increasing evidence that the minimally invasive procedure is safe and effective and adds to the options available for patients with hemorrhoids.

Sajan will present his abstract, "Long-term Efficacy of Hemorrhoid Artery Embolization in an Outpatient Multidisciplinary Center: A Review of 221 Patients" on March 27th at the Closing Plenary Session of the Society of Interventional Radiology's Annual Meeting in Salt Lake City, Utah.
